December 30, 2007: Infonaut to be Featured at Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference
From February 24th to 28th, Infonaut will be featured at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual conference in Orlando, Florida: “where ‘what if’ shakes hands with ‘we could do that’”.
As ESRI’s business partner of the year for 2007, Infonaut will be displaying at the ESRI booth, where we are launching the first version of a new hospital application.
Our Location-Based Business Intelligence hospital application utilizes GIS (Geographic Information System) and RFID (Radio Frequency ID) technology for real-time Hospital Performance Management, Infection Control and Patient Flow.
RFID tags provide a moving location signal of patients, staff, and assets that is sent to the GIS system. With the Infonaut solution, hospitals can measure and analyze opera-tional flow, report & improve on patient wait-times, and respond to outbreaks faster and more safely. With our Intelligent Tracking solution hospitals can save time, money, and lives.

November 27, 2007: Improving Patient Flow in the South East CCAC
The South East Community Care Access Centre (SE CCAC) - responsible for managing access to government-funded home, community services, and long-term care resources - has a systemic problem with patient flow, and recruited Infonaut to help solve it.
More than 20% of all acute bed days in the SE CCAC are being used by Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patients. Acute care is one of the most expensive and resource intensive services in the healthcare system. However, an ALC patient doesn't need acute care, but remains in an acute bed because of circumstances preventing proper patient flow to other care sites, including the patient’s home, convalescent care, or long-term care facility.
High numbers of ALC patients mean supply is mismatched to demand, which results in a significant strain on healthcare resources in a local community. Infonaut is helping the SE CCAC take control of this urgent local issue by applying our expertise to identify the inefficiencies in the flow of patients through the care continuum. In November 2007, Infonaut analyzed of the region's patient flow problems.
Infonaut assembled a comprehensive as-is picture of patient flow, defined an improved future state, and itemized the steps for how to get from where the SE CCAC is, to where it wants to be: moving patients from one level of care to another as quickly and efficiently as possible. Recommendations included changes to the cohort structure; suggestions on how to "front-load" the discharge process; standardized client tracking & baseline metrics for ALC patients at all levels; and modifications to patient prioritization systems.
This work is especially critical in the SE CCAC, where three CCACs have been consolidated into one, making operational issues, like resource allocation & patient flow, of utmost importance. Key decision makers have to work in partnership across organizations, geographies, and providers, to ensure this transformation goes smoothly, and results in positive outcomes for patient care.
Infonaut's work on the SE CCAC's patient flow has created a common understanding of the region's patient flow strengths and shortcomings, and gave the newly defined SE CCAC a starting point and strategy for continuous system improvement.

August 29, 2007: Infonaut and Kingston Public Health to Build Real-Time GIS Syndromic Surveillance System
Infonaut and Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Public Health (KFLA PH) were recently awarded significant funding by GeoConnections for the creation of a Geospatial Decision Support - Syndromic Surveillance system.
"Syndromic surveillance” applies to surveillance using health-related data that precede diagnosis and signal a sufficient probability of a case or an outbreak to warrant further public health response.
This system will use real-time, anonymized respiratory and gastrointestinal data gathered from at least 7 area hospitals to aid in the prompt detection of related diseases in an effort to improve the sharing of information and enhance communication between the community, professional end-users and decision makers.
The objective is to better inform public health, researchers and the community on the prompt detection of respiratory and gastrointestinal related diseases to limit the spread of disease, reduce the impact on hospital emergency departments, save lives among at risk populations (children and elderly), and to better understand the spread of disease.
GeoConnnections recognized and awarded the partnership for their unique investigative GIS concept in aiding real-time detection and assessment of disease outbreaks.
While most public health departments do not incorporate spatial information into disease surveillance, there is a growing body of knowledge that indicates such data can be a useful tool in tracking the spread of certain diseases.
The prompt detection of respiratory and gastrointestinal related diseases are of particular importance due to the rapid transmission and potential burden such illnesses have on the community.
In particular, the threat of a pandemic necessitates the early spatial detection of an outbreak for appropriate public health action in order to save lives.

August 29, 2007: Infonaut and the South East CCAC to Map Patient Flow Process
Infonaut recently won a Request for Proposals to map the South East Community Care Access Centre’s (SE CCAC) patient flow process for clients requiring long-term care home placements from area hospitals or community settings.
“Patient flow” is the efficient, effective, and appropriate movement of patients, clients, and residents across sectors within the healthcare system.
The CCACs role is to provide access to government-funded home and community services, and long-term care homes. The SE CCAC is one of 14 in Ontario working together with community partners to enhance access and coordination for people across the province.
Given the consolidation of 3 Community Care Access Centres (CCAC) in the South East area, patient flow is an issue of critical importance for the CCAC. Addressing the Alternate Level of Care (ALC) is not just about waiting for a long-term care bed—it is a “whole system” issue that requires partnerships and planning across all care areas.
To this end, we are pleased that we can provide the SE CCAC with a framework and approach to eliminate duplication and waste byy creating a standardized process in delivering the CCAC’s core business.

May 7, 2007: Infonaut Profiled in HealthyGIS
The ‘LHIN Health Atlas’ a branded version of Infonaut Health, developed with Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, has been profiled as a cover story in HealthyGIS, an international industry publication.
The ministry created the atlas to provide ministry and LHIN management with quick and easy access to maps depicting LHIN-level and sub-LHIN-level health care provider and health-related information as well as metrics.
It is a powerful tool that has been customized for their specific health care planning purposes. Preset map extents and LHIN-based queries, enables easy access to the information they need.
The core strength of the atlas is comprehensive data. The ministry can now, in one system, see all the service providers (e.g., long-term care homes, hospitals, public health units, community care access centers) and relevant local health data and indicators at the same time.
This is the second time in 6 months that Infonaut has been recognized in an international publication, having been featured in Wired magazine in November 2006.

February 25, 2007: Infonaut Solution Featured in Geocortex Internet Mapping News
The Spotlight is on Infonaut and Public Health
This month, Geocortex Internet Mapping News features a story on an Infonaut solution created for the Ontario Ministry of Health’s Public Health Division.
An early outcome from the deadly SARS virus in Toronto was the development of a web-based GIS tool - with a vision to enable staff to better understand and visualize the geographic factors that influence public health in Ontario.
The solution, called ‘Public Health WebGIS’, was first rolled out to a select group of users in 2004 and is fast becoming an important component of the decision-support strategy. This tool is now used in strategic planning, monitoring, and emergency response within the Public Health Division.
The value of GIS in Public Health has been gaining increasing approbation by government and research organizations around the globe. The World Health Organization (WHO) cites examples such as determining geographic distribution of diseases, analyzing spatial and temporal trends, mapping populations at risk, stratifying risk factors, assessing resource allocation, planning and targeting interventions, and monitoring interventions over time.
There are 2 fundamental strengths of Public Health WebGIS. The first is the comprehensive data that has been made available in a secure environment to all registered users. The ability to layer context, needs, service providers and system performance makes this an extremely powerful tool for health professionals.
The second is what Infonaut refers to as ‘Ubiquitous GIS for a Common Operating Picture’. A key lesson learned from SARS was simply the importance of getting everyone on the same page. Better surveillance and communication are absolute requirements for effective strategy, monitoring, and – ultimately - emergency response.
Benefits of GIS in Public Health
Prior to the introduction of this tool, the insights and capabilities that GIS offers were limited to staff with specialized GIS skills, using high-end desktop applications.
The benefits of equipping all public health personnel with a ubiquitous mapping / GIS tool are numerous and distributed, reflecting the diverse type of work performed. The following are but a few examples of how the Infonaut’s GIS solution is transforming and improving how work is performed
Strategic Planning:
- Quick understanding of complex relationships between the Ministry, health units, hospitals, regional health authorities, and other health entities.
- Determining how funding correlates with population health.
Infectious Diseases:
- The application has been built for widespread dissemination of ‘Reportable’ metrics – including Blastomycosus, C. Difficil, HIV activity, and others.
- Surveillance activities can be monitored from anywhere, at anytime.
Emergency Management:
- Staff can quickly identify hotspots and potential problem areas, getting detailed information on an emergency area and who may be affected.
- Identification of geographic and temporal trends in resource allocation, identifying locations of personnel for outbreak planning & response.
The nature of this visual, interactive mapping tool introduces a new level of understanding, breaks down information silos by assimilating data across ministries and jurisdictions, and creates a new paradigm for working with public health data.
The benefits of Public Health Web GIS’s instant access ensures the right people become comprehensively informed about the health system and the geographic factors that influence public health - and are equipped to make faster, more informed decisions.
About Infonaut

January 4, 2007: ‘Infonaut’ #2 in 2006
The word ‘infonaut’ has been listed by The Global Language Monitor (GLM) as one of the top ten words of 2006. GLM defines infonaut as "those who blithely travel along the ‘infobahn’."
We were beaten out by ‘Sustainable’, who grabbed the #1 position - but we don’t feel that momentum is sustainable into 2007. We easily saw off a weak challenge from ‘Hiki Komori’, at #3.
What is most interesting is that ‘infonaut’ has becoming relevant all over the world - an important word not only in the English language but also as a global concept for people searching and sharing information and knowledge around the globe.
At Infonaut, we’re committed to the concept of being “infonauts” - exploring the infosphere, analyzing and mapping cyberspace, visualizing complexity, creating new knowledge and exciting service for a better life in the information society. We do this by applying the power if Geographic information Systems (GIS) to problems unique to healthcare.
The history of the word “infonaut” and a list of usage today can be found at http://www.infonaut.se/InEnglish.html.

January 1, 2007: Happy New Year From Infonaut
Infonaut would like to extend our wishes for a happy and healthy 2007.
Last year was Infonaut’s most successful yet. Being part of the team that won a Merit Award at Showcase Ontario and a Gold Award at the Public Health Quality Fair - for improving public sector access to information - was a thrill and confirmed the strategic and operational value of the Infonaut Health software.
Other highlights include being invited to speak at health-related conferences, including ESRI’s User Conferences, GIS Leaders in Health, the Geocortex Developer conference, and GIAC summit. Here we demonstrated the value of infonaut’s approach and forged strong partnerships both in North America and overseas.
As an exhibitor at the ‘Homeland Security and Health’ conference in Denver CO we received extensive exposure in the USA, especially since this event coincid! ed with the November issue of Wired magazine hitting newsstands. Infon aut provided Wired with GIS based analysis and were interviewed for their story on “Bird Flu in North America”. That exposure led to a flood of recognition and further collaboration with US clients.
Finally, expanding into bigger Toronto offices, establishing ourselves in Ottawa to keep up with our growing operations, and adding several new full-time employees ensures we are well positioned for more success in the coming year.
And with many features in development, 2007 promises to be our busiest and most successful year yet.
Infonaut Inc. is a Toronto-based software and consulting company focused on putting health on the map. We deliver critical, health-related information to organizations in a way that is easy-to-use, easy-to-implement and cost-effective. Healthcare spans multiple levels of government but is primarily a local issue - and the geographic perspective of Infonaut Health allows users to think, investigate, and act locally.
